KENTS HILL SCHOOL

FINANCIAL AID PROGRAM

2010-2011

As part of our commitment to helping qualified students and their families afford a Kents Hill education, the school offers need-based financial aid. Since the number of applications for financial aid exceeds the availability of funds, awards are made on a competitive basis to students of proven ability and achievement, whose families demonstrate financial need.

Applying for Financial Aid
To be considered for financial aid:

  • The student must have been accepted for admission or re-enrollment.
The application and financial aid process is concurrent.  It is encouraged to
apply for financial aid while also completing the admissions application.
  • The student must have his/her parents(s) or guardian(s) complete a financial aid
     application.

A complete financial aid application includes the following information:

  • A completed Parents' Finacial Statement (PFS) either completed online or using a paper application.
  • A signed copy of the most recent federal income tax return for each parent/guardian sent to School and Student Services (SSS).
  • A copy of the most recent W2 for each parent/guardian sent to SSS.
  • If parents own a business or working farm, a complete business/farm statement with all schedules sent to SSS

Note:  A copy of the most recent tax return, W2’s and business/farm statement (if required) can also be sent to Kents Hill School.  If applying for financial aid to more than one school, sending the W2’s and tax returns to SSS eliminates sending this information to multiple schools.

The Financial Aid Application
Kents Hill School endorses the recommended policy of the School and Student Services (SSS) as part of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS).

This policy states that parents have an obligation to pay for the educational expenses of their children to the extent that they are able. The parents' obligation to pay takes precedence over the school's responsibility to provide financial assistance. While the remarriage of either parent creates a new family unit with new relationships, the natural (or adoptive) parents still have responsibility for educational expenses despite any legal agreements to the contrary. Therefore, the resources of the entire new family unit are considered pertinent.

The financial aid application is the same for the custodial parent(s)/guardian(s) and the non-custodial parent.  Both parties must complete the Parents' Financial Statement (PFS) and we suggest that you keep a copy of your application for your files.

Timetable
Kents Hill's financial aid deadline is February 15th.  Kents Hill School notifies students for both admission and financial aid on March 10th. Financial aid applications received after February 15th are reviewed on a rolling basis. Regardless of the date, families should always feel comfortable asking what their financial options might be for the coming school year.

Kents Hill School has a Financial Aid Committee, which reviews completed applications for financial aid. Grants are based on demonstrated need, but the Committee will consider factors such as the student's character, academic performance, and extracurricular activities and interests when determining the amount of the award.

Reconsideration
The Financial Aid Committee does its best to determine an award that meets the needs of the family based on careful consideration of all of the information provided in the financial aid application.  Given that funds are limited, the Financial Aid committee will not be able to meet the needs of every family who applies for aid.  It is encouraged that other forms of assistance be considered if a family does not qualify for or is not satisfied with the aid award.

Families whose financial circumstances change or who feel that further consideration should be given to their award may ask the Financial Aid Committee to reconsider their award.
A family may ask for a reconsideration of the aid award only if there is new information provided to the Financial Aid Committee or a change in financial circumstancesAll requests for reconsideration must be made in writing and are reviewed after April 1.

Confidentiality
Financial aid applications are personal and confidential. Materials sent to the school are held in strict confidence.  In return, we ask parents and students not to discuss their awards with others.

Financial Aid Acceptance Deadline
Notification of the financial aid award will be included on the enrollment contract.  If the enrollment contract and deposit are not sent back to the school by the due date on the contract, the aid will be withdrawn.

If you have questions or concerns regarding the financial aid process, please do not hesitate to call, write, or email.  Thank you for providing complete and accurate information.
