What better place than Kents Hill School for students to study the environment?
With mountains to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the east, and with lakes bordering both sides of the 600 acre wooded campus, students at Kents Hill School are poised and eager to learn about their natural environment. In addition, the nearby colleges of Colby, Bates and Bowdoin as well as the state capital, Augusta, provide unique local and state resources for classes, speakers and programs.
Responsible stewards of our natural heritage...
Kents Hill's distinctive Environmental Studies Program requires every student to complete one environmental studies course, as part of the school's mission to make each student aware of his responsibility as a steward of his environment. Students can take classes in the following areas:
- AP Environmental Science
Environmental Art and Design
Environmental Resource Use
Environmental Ethics
Conservation Biology
Literature of Place
Lake Ecology
Field Biology
Environmental Wood Sculpture
Environmental Literature
- Each year, the Environmental Studies Program hosts an Environmental Day, with speakers, trips and workshops devoted to topics regarding the environment.
- During Class Projects in the fall, the juniors complete an Environmental Science program.
- Finally, the school is in the process of building a comprehensive residential component to the program, including a complete recycling program. The Williams Woodworking Studio and Reed Hall, our newest buildings, were built using green technologies, and several faculty residences are being heated with biofuel this year, as an experiment.
This year, the entire school watched the Oscar-winning documentary An Inconvenient Truth, followed by small discussion groups of students and faculty. Following the film, students and faculty were invited to sign the "Step It Up Maine" petition, which asked the Maine legislature to "step it up" and lower carbon emissions in Maine. This petition was delivered to Governor Baldacci at the Step It Up rally in Augusta, which students and faculty attended. The Environmental Art & Design class added to the day by posting their creations and messages around campus.
