What better place than Kents Hill School for students to study the environment?

With mountains to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the east, and with lakes bordering both sides of the 600 acre wooded campus, students at Kents Hill School are poised and eager to learn about their natural environment. In addition, the nearby colleges of Colby, Bates and Bowdoin as well as the state capital, Augusta, provide unique local and state resources for classes, speakers and programs.

Responsible stewards of our natural heritage...
Kents Hill's distinctive Environmental Studies Program requires every student to complete one environmental studies course, as part of the school's mission to make each student aware of his responsibility as a steward of his environment. Students can take classes in the following areas:
    AP Environmental Science
    Environmental Art and Design
    Environmental Resource Use
    Environmental Ethics
    Conservation Biology
    Literature of Place
    Lake Ecology
    Field Biology
    Environmental Wood Sculpture
    Environmental Literature
The school engages students in exploring their environment in a number of additional ways:
  • Each year, the Environmental Studies Program hosts an Environmental Day, with speakers, trips and workshops devoted to topics regarding the environment.

  • This year, the entire school watched the Oscar-winning documentary An Inconvenient Truth, followed by small discussion groups of students and faculty.  Following the film, students and faculty were invited to sign the "Step It Up Maine" petition, which asked the Maine legislature to "step it up" and lower carbon emissions in Maine.  This petition was delivered to Governor Baldacci at the Step It Up rally in Augusta, which students and faculty attended.  The Environmental Art & Design class added to the day by posting their creations and messages around campus.
  • During Class Projects in the fall, the juniors complete an Environmental Science program.
  • Finally, the school is in the process of building a comprehensive residential component to the program, including a complete recycling program.  The Williams Woodworking Studio and Reed Hall, our newest buildings, were built using green technologies, and several faculty residences are being heated with biofuel this year, as an experiment.

"Studying AP Environmental Science has helped me understand that we cannot be ignorant about the environment. It has taught me about species, organisms, niches, natural selection and especially humanity's impact on these natural systems. I have learned the importance of taking a stand and acting in my community; environmental issues are important to all of us. My eyes have been opened to the natural beauty of environments, especially in an environment such as Kents Hill.

We are learning to see the importance of the species and systems in the earth's cycle and how they influence our lives. Through field studies in our back woods, I have come to understand how Kents Hill affects the environment, and how the environment affects Kents Hill. The trees help us to breathe better, the grass and soil to produce the plants that give our community exquisite beauty. What I have learned about environmental awareness at Kents Hill, I will carry with me for the rest of my life."
