Information Services is a merger of the traditional library and technology departments that recognizes the central need of the school community to access and process information in an integrated manner. The department supports all aspects of the school's information and technology needs.

Cochrane Library

"Knowledge develops wisdom: wisdom is the key to success."

This message is inscribed for all to see in a plaque located in the library's foyer, dedicating it to Kents Hill alumnus, parent and trustee, James "Jay" Cochrane '36.

In the Cochrane Library there are numerous resources for research, quiet places for individual and group study, the Isaacson Computer Lab where computer classes meet and students work independently. The library and its staff provide students and faculty with the support needed to achieve success.

Senior Books:  Each year, the Cochrane Library publishes a list of suggested books to be donated in honor of a member of the graduating class.  This list can be found in the Downloads Section on the right hand side of this page.

Periodically, we post a list of Highlighted Books from our collection - see the list in our Downloads section on the right hand side.

Computers and Technology

There are 3 computer labs on campus:
  • Issacson Computer Lab in the Cochrane Library
  • Dunn Science Lab
  • Masterman Union Lab
Additional computers are available for junior and senior/postgraduate use in the College Counseling Office.

All dorm rooms are wired for network/internet access. While many students choose to bring their own computers, there are always computers available for students who need to use them. A computer technician is on campus Monday-Friday to help students with computer problems.

Courses and requirements
Computer literacy is no longer a graduation requirement, because technological skills are integrated throughout the curriculum. Students who wish to pursue a more in-depth understanding of technology can elect to take courses offered by the Technology Department. Five academic courses in Web design, graphic design and multimedia are offered.

Computer Compatibility and Use
Students may possess computers or similar devices (Pocket PC, Palm, Tablet PC, etc.) under the following guidelines:
  • The student must register his/her computer or device with the Information Services office.
  • The computer or other device must be authorized by Information Services before the student attempts to use it to access network or Internet services.
  • The student must maintain a current, enabled version of McAfee or Symantec anti-virus software. (The school can provide McAfee software at no extra cost).
Kents Hill currently supports the following computer operating systems:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000
  • Windows XP (Home & Professional)
  • MAC OS X. Legacy systems (Windows 95, 98, ME or MAC OS 6-9) are no longer supported on the school network.
Before each student is issued a password to the school's network, s/he must sign an Acceptable Use Policy, which outlines the student's responsibilities with respect to using the network.
