Seven students from Kents Hill School went to Europe over March Break with History teacher Kim Nanof and Art teacher Babs Wheelden for an eleven day adventure of art and history.
We departed from Boston on Thursday, March 11th and arrived in Paris at 11:30am Friday morning. The Kents Hill group hit the ground running in Paris. Our guide, Elena, picked us up at the airport, dropped the luggage off at the hotel, and quickly had the Kents Hill travelers on the Metro to the Louvre. The rest of our first day in Paris was spent at the largest and most fabulous art museum in the world. Saturday the group was off to Musee D'Orsay and Rodin Museum, Trocadero, a creperie for dinner, and the Eiffel tower in the evening. Sunday it was on the Metro again and off to Versailles to tour the palace and biking in the surrounding gardens. That night dinner was had in Marais with a stop at Pompidou. On Monday the group continued its Paris tour with the Place Vendome, the Paris Opera, and Monmarte for lunch. The Paris portion of the tour finished with a cruise on the Seine. Brilliant!
We left Paris at 7pm on Monday and spent 12 uncomfortable hours in less than luxurious sleeper train car and then boarded a bus to Siena which was amazing. On Tuesday we arrived at our hotel in Florence. The group’s first stop was Accademia to see The David. The next day we had a tour of Florence and the Uffizi, Ponte Vecchio, time in Piazza de Republica, the Duomo, visited a leather workshop, and had lunch outside in Piazza Santa Margarita.
On Thursday a cushy coach bus took us to Rome, through Tuscany, stopping for infused olive oil and truffle pate`, such is life in Italy. Our first stop in Rome was the Vatican which is the second largest and most fabulous collection of art in the world.
We spent our first night enjoying Rome with a guided tour of Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, gelato, and a night bus tour to save our aching feet. Our second day in Rome was filled with a historical walk and tour of the Colosseum, the Forum, Trajans Column, Piazza Venezia, bad calamari in Piazza Navona, and shopping on Via Condotti and Via del Corso.
Saturday we packed up again and were off by bus to Pompeii, for a cameo workshop and demonstration before touring Pompeii. After lunch we were off to the Amalfi Coast and beautiful Sorrento!
Sorrento is a stunningly beautiful coastal town that was lacking in tourism, a welcome treat. However, the biggest treat of our trip was our final day on the Isle of Capri. The sun was shining and the water was sparkling. It was an amazing way to end an amazing trip.
